Sales tax calculator (add or remove tax)
Add tax to a price or extract the tax from a total that already includes it. Type the rate that applies to you: US state and local sales tax, VAT or GST.
Formulas
Add tax: total = price × (1 + rate)
Remove tax: price = total ÷ (1 + rate)
A common mistake is subtracting the rate from the total. With a 20% rate, $120 − 20% = $96, but the correct pre-tax price is $120 ÷ 1.20 = $100.
Examples
- $100 at 8.25%: tax $8.25, total $108.25.
- $120 including 20% VAT: price before tax $100, VAT $20.
